Alongside a focus on service to our clients and communities, PCD also prides itself on being a fun and healthy place to work, and 2024 saw a continuation of a focus on wellness at PCD. In 2023, we launched a wellness program emphasizing physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Topics this year included a walking challenge, nutrition bingo, word-of-the-day quizzes, and a plant ID challenge. Our goals with this program include promoting healthy habits and increasing awareness of little changes our employees can incorporate into their lives
Employees organized many of their own group wellness- and community-focused activities this year. In April, eight of our coworkers ran the Vernonia Marathon Relay. In July, six team members ran the Hagg Lake triathlon relay as several co-workers came to cheer them on. “I enjoy doing triathlons on my own and I thought other people at PCD would too. Helping other people become familiar with the intricacies of the sport, talking training schedules and injuries, as well as guiding them on shaking out the nerves on a race day was rewarding,” said Michelle Hundley, resident triathlete. The two teams were evenly matched and the finish was a nail biter with one team crossing the line just 10 seconds ahead of the other. PCD was proud to sponsor our athletes and non-running coworkers showed up to cheer on both teams.
2024 marked the 7th year of PCD participating in Engineering Without Borders Kickball tournament. A yearly tradition, this event promotes good-natured competition within the industry all in support of Engineers Without Borders, an organization that empowers communities throughout the world to take on engineering projects to meet their basic needs. Fam Almashan, the organizer for PCD’s kickball team said “I love signing PCD up to play because it’s a fantastic way for us to connect with like-minded individuals while contributing to impactful projects that change lives”.
This summer PCD continued our tradition of participating with mediocre results in the AEC (Architects, Engineers, and Construction) Softball League. Our standings reminded us that we are stronger in our math skills than our softball skills, but that never stops us from participating. Some of our players have been a part of the AEC league for over 20 years and this year’s line-up included many of our players’ children standing in as designated runners and bat-kids.
